Understand myself as a learner
What was the reason for your learning?
Necessity of having to do it myself because money is always short, especially now that I am a student.
Did it "just happen" or was it planned?
Just happened. I decided to purchase an older Queenslander that was in severe need of renovating. So out of necessity I thought myself how to use power tools, a tape measure and how to tear down and put up walls, tiles and windows. Much to my surprise I am not bad at it. Some things may not be perfect, but at least I can say I did that myself.
Were you anticipating success?
Not really but it was a bonus when it all worked out good.
Was your motivation intrinsic or extrinsic?
Extrinsic
Was it a useful or desirable thing to learn?
Yes it has been the best thing I have done for myself ever. I can now do what is needed without waiting for someone else to do it for me.
Was it a by heart (rote) type of learning (eg multiplication tables) or was it more about understanding and using the information?
I think that the process was embedded by looking at the manuals and using the equipment to gain an understanding of their operating capacities.
What sort of aids did you have in learning? eg did you repeat it over and over again (like a telephone number); did you practice until you were successful; did you sit and ponder its significance?
Learning to use the tools was through trial and error, many pieces of wood went into the pile for the bon fire. But after re measuring and adjusting the tools success was achieved. The power tool manuals were of some assistance but actually using them, provided me with better understanding.
Who did you learn from? Did somebody support you, model or explain the desired learning outcome?
I learnt from doing it. I looked at the manuals and tools and just went for it. I find it much easier to learn by doing than to have instructions given by someone that knows everything and just wants to take over.
How did you know you were successful in learning it? Did someone praise you; did you experience a feeling of success or satisfaction?
I knew that I was successful when I looked at the final product and was actually proud of doing it. My kids told everyone that came to visit that mum did that, isn’t she smart.
